Sharon Machira leads the Nomad Travel Club. She is a passionate storyteller who previously served as a Senior Journalist at the BBC and P.R lead for Google in Kenya.

Edwin Maina is a Nairobi-based photographer. As a member of the Urban Pitchaz collective, he celebrates the diverse African culture by combining fashion and fine art photography.

His work highlights themes of resilience, hope, and humanity, and has been showcased in prestigious publications like Vogue, The Wilson Quarterly, and Fashion Scout.

Louise Sommerlatte

Louise Sommerlatte is the founder and designer behind Hamaji Studio. Her brand is an African designer collection created around preserving ancient textile traditions and nomadic craftsmanship while empowering small-scale artisans in Kenya. The studio was recognized as one of the top three designers in Kenya by the Ethical Fashion Innovation Awards.

In Nairobi, the fusion of cultures fuels a dynamic art, music, and design scene with a mix of lively basket markets and contemporary galleries to unique boutiques and artist collectives. Whether you're discovering African artists at Circle Art Gallery or enjoying a leisurely afternoon at House of Treasures exploring local design, there's always something new to discover. Explore up and coming fashion brands at Arrai Shop or upcycled street wear brands at concept store Studio 18KE, located in the Kuona Artists Collective. Looking for eclectic and rare furniture and art pieces? Tribal Gallery is the place to go. CIRCLE ART GALLERY (Edwin's favorite)

Circle Art Gallery stands as a vibrant showcase of contemporary African art, spotlighting the talents of emerging and established artists across Kenya and the broader continent. Through its engaging exhibitions and dedication to artistic exchange, Circle Art Gallery remains a cornerstone in celebrating and advancing the diverse narratives of African creativity.

Afrika House (Sharon's favorite)

Afrika House stands out as a creative retreat in a rapidly transforming city. The building features a gallery showcasing Kenyan design and art by local artisans, all set within an acre of indigenous gardens. Guests can enjoy a variety of workshops or opt to spend the night to fully experience its charm.

SEVARIA STUDIO

Sevaria is a brand that prides itself in the creation of culturally inspired genderfluid pieces. Through this, they aim to shed light on African cultures in their entirety. Using silhouettes, textiles, style and creative direction to channel different African tribes, religions, music and art. They work closely with weaving communities in rural Kenya and use upcycled textiles derived from local second hand markets. Custom pieces upon request.

Arrai SHOP

Arrai is trendy local marketplace for up-and-coming African fashion and jewelry brands, where you can find a mix of local designers as well as live events, pop ups and more.

Studio 18KE (& Akiba)

Discover local fashion-forward curated streetwear brands through the concept store 18KE in Kuona Artist Collective. Brands such as Akiba, Metamorphisized and Nairobi Apperal district are featured which showcase a new narrative on Kenyan streetwear combining Y2K aesthetics to 90’s flavour mixed with upcycled fabrics and sustainability at its core.

House of Treasures

House of Treasures  is a vibrant hub where locals and expats gather to enjoy sustainable design and craftsmanship, delicious food and a relaxing atmosphere. Shop local brands here such as Siafu, Bush Princess, Indiawithlove and so much more.

Inspired by the Swahili word for "ant," this brand offers beatiful homeware made from natural materials, carefully crafted by hand in their local weaving studio. Founded by two women from different continents, Siafu is an ode to a woman's ability to carry ten times her weight and work as a community - just like the ant.

Floral statement pieces by hyped jewelry design studio NBO

NBO is a sustainable handmade jewelry brand with a studio in the Kuona artist collective in Nairobi. The beauty of the brand extends beyond the use of upcycled materials to include its delicate crafting process. Each collection is thoughtfully created using repurposed equipment from Africa, such as an old water pump transformed into a drill and a polishing bench for the jewelry items.

Cultiva (Louise's favorite)

Make sure to go to Cultiva in the beginning of your trip as you will want to visit this special place more than once. While serving modern dishes with a mix of flavors from all continents, the ingredients are farm-to-table, grown at their vertical farm next door. The ambiance is vibrant, both for a Saturday night dinner setting with a group of friends or relaxed brunch on the weekend. A must go, if you ask us!

Bamba

Bamba, will surprise you with its lively atmosphere and delicious cocktails. The restaurant serves modern international cuisine with delicious tapas-sized plates and pizza to share as well as an exquisite wine collection. With occasional live music in the background, the Resto Bar stands out as a truly special destination in the heart of the capital.

beit é selam (Sharon's favorite)

A perfect blend of contemporary and vintage décor restaurant where you can enjoy your dining time, whether it's in the indoor dining area, at the counter bar, or in the outdoor patio garden. You can expect an exceptional meal at Beit é Selam that reflects the taste of Nairobi, influenced by diverse culinary traditions from across the African Continent.
